Alternatives to YouTube
YouTube obviously falls under the category of vlogging (video blogging): users subscribe to accounts which typically post entries in video format.
This content format has persisted since 2005, although YouTube has recently "branched out" to include other sub-genres of video hosting with its "Shorts" (essentially "mini-vlogging") and "Live" (essentailly "live-vlogging") events.
Similar services to YouTube include:
Vimeo
- features
- high quality videos
- less focus on popularity and more on quality
- for those into serious videography and film-making
- caveats
- not very well-known despite its age
- slow site; often unable to load
- politics
- neutral to progressive-leaning
- apps
- official mobile app available
- very useable on both desktop and mobile
I used Vimeo in the early 2010s and only uploaded new content recently to re-familiarize myself with the site!
Odysee
- features
- all the traditional functionality on YouTube
- incentivizes viewing new content by receiving digital currency (LBRY tokens)
- caveats
- a learning curve when it comes to all the functionality
- not as well known as YouTube
- you won't find any given music video here
- politics
- libertarian-leaning
- apps
- mobile app available
- best viewed on a desktop browser (or television!)
I use Odysee as a backup to my travel videos on YouTube!
Rumble
- features
- all the traditional functionality on YouTube
- straightforward monetization
- caveats
- more political content than YouTube (and even Odysee)
- politics
- conservative- to libertarian-leaning
- apps
- official mobile app available
I don't actively use Rumble but I may in the future!
Others
Other video and vlogging type sites similar to YouTube also include the following (but I don't have an account with any of them and don't know very much about them - I only know of them and don't plan on using them):
- Dailymotion
- Bitchute (somewhat NSFW)
